Khmer Eats: But I Thought It Was Hotdog!

Cambodian Food & Cuisine, Living in Phnom Penh / Sunday, December 12th, 2010

I’m having a lazy Sunday afternoon and was looking up some stuff online but nothing sticks so I decided to clean up my spare computer drive. I was browsing my photo archives when I saw some photos that instantly reminded me of a funny incident that happened way back..

Kiddo was playing around with our neighbor’s kids and one of the kids gave her some of this..

They were snacking on this. And kiddo was so excited, went running to the house and told me, ‘Mommy, bong srei gave me hotdogs!’ After looking at it I also thought it was chicken  hotdog with some kind of spices.  So, kiddo hurriedly tore of the plastic wrapper and bit into one…

Then she screamed and cried. I wondered what’s up, so I looked at the ‘hotdog’ and whoa, two pieces of red ripe chili lodged inside! Lol! No wonder she was screaming so loudly, crying and in shouting, “I thought it was HOTDOG!” in between gulps of water. There goes kiddo’s first real taste of pure chili.

Needless to say, we both learned a lesson. Not that this tasted bad,  I actually like it. It’s called ‘naim‘. It’s made of fish and quite common here in Cambodia and in Thailand.
