A few months ago, we decided to spend a few days in Sihanoukville. We were itching for some sand and sea breeze. I always find a day or two at the beach does a lot for asthmatic me and my daughter. Anyway, a few days in Sihanoukville can be boring for us, for some reason this beach town and I don’t really click. I find it a bit too busy and some parts are downright sleazy.
So we decided we might as well do a day cruise to one of the islands. At least it’ll be quiet there. We booked a day cruise with AC Boat Cruise and I made the reservations thru Facebook. You can also call their number +855(0) 69 57 69 69 though I find it better to book thru messenger so I can have ‘written’ confirmation. They were also having a ‘promotion’ that time so I got the price of $20 per pax, regular price is $25. Inclusions: RT pick up from hotel, buffet lunch and day cruise to Koh Rong Samloeun Island.
The night before the cruise, their staff met us and gave us our tickets. On the day of the cruise, they sent a tuktuk to pick us up and bring us to the dock.
The cruise boat was average sized with a lower and upper deck. We initially stationed ourselves on the upper deck for the views but it was scorching hot so we relocated to the lower deck. I can’t seem to find photos of the low deck but it was crammed full of benches, there weren’t much space to walk.
I was starting to get apprehensive as they seemed intent to cram as much people as they can in there. So if you’re looking for a breezy boat trip, forget about it. With so many people in, it was really noisy. So much for me looking for some quiet!! They did provide life jackets for each person. Our tour departure was delayed when a group came but there weren’t any seats available anymore and no more life jackets, and they lady demanded (and I agree with her!) they return to the dock and they want to disembark. After much discussion, they group decided to go ahead and join us, after the assistants procured some more life jackets, but they were left standing.
The boat trip was uncomfortable! I mean yeah, its not a pricey cruise but for $20+, passengers are entitled to some breathing space, no? Lunch was also served. I wasn’t expecting much about the lunch to begin with but it was a major major disappointment, not because of the taste, it was quite delicious. For the amount of people they loaded they served so little to the point some were pushing and shoving each other already to get some food. It was bad. Thankfully, I’m always a ready momma. I packed snacks and food so we didn’t get hungry.
We stopped in a small island Koh Thas and a whole bunch of people got down to do some snorkeling. After about 30 minutes we headed over to Koh Rong Samlouen. For me this was the highlight of the day cruise. I might have been so pissed by how uncomfortable the boat ride was, but there is no denying Koh Rong Samlouen is beautiful.
But alas, we didn’t get to swim much as it was extremely hot and before we knew it, the boat was calling us to get back already.
If you ask me, was this boat cruise worth it. I’d say no. I think better shop around for other day cruises or I think its best to go there by usual speed ferry and spend a night then head back the next day or there are enough ferries running these routes you can probably do it in one day too.
I don’t really post negative reviews often but for those considering taking this day cruise, at least you’d have a fair warning. This boat cruise was nerve wracking to be honest, I just ended up being so stressed. I was not expecting 5-star amenities but I seriously didn’t expect it to be packed like it was a can of sardines. And looking back, I thought it was scary, thankfully nothing bad happened.
